[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]There is a Kenyan generation who think the wall unit is a furniture piece from the past that needs to either remain there or be updated and then there is a Mum (and Dad) who thinks it is a timeless piece of essential home furniture which is the sentimental heart of their home. The irony is both opinions have a place and can be right at the same time. Wall units range in style from the contemporary to the very traditional, which can be custom-made to match the decor of the living room are dining room where they end up being installed. The beauty is that, a lot of customisation is possible at the request of the customer, ensuring the right look, feel, fit and integration for the room where it will reside.
Looking around, there are options that can easily serve the same function, are less bulky and more tasteful. The days of big, loud (and mum-proud?) storage units are over and the current trend is sleek-er with simple-er clean lines with less storage space, since the trend is increasingly minimalist. Some ideas for wall units for the Kenyan home and consumer are as follows:
A low cupboard:
This is a cupboard or coffee table with storage such as shelves or drawers for storing or displaying articles. The ideal option is a simple short one or two shelf unit with a flat top and storage space at the bottom. This create a space for a TV as well as any needed storage space for other accessories.
Console:
A console table is table about 30 inches tall often set against a wall. It has either a wide top or fairly shallow one and is often a standalone piece so there is a lot of room to be creative in terms of style and materials used. It could be a combination of wood and metal with drawers or shelves for storage or a unique base with a glass or mirrored top to display special objects. The fact that it takes up only a little floor space makes it the perfect replacement for a traditional wall unit in a small living space.
Mantelpieces:
A mantelpiece, also referred to a floating shelf is a single metal or wood furniture piece mounted on a wall in a room without visible mountings. The mountings are hidden either underneath or on the wall and the shelves can be placed symmetrically or asymmetrically to hold books, ornaments and other items. This allows the TV to be mounted on its own or on the top of a shelf for effect.
TV stand:
A TV stand is a table, entertainment centre or cabinet for the purpose of supporting the TV at the right height for comfortable viewing. This gives the room a focal point that leaves the walls free of shelves but available for pictures and other wall ornaments to enhance the space. The stand could be a smooth feel wood, rustic or metal to customise the space as desired.
Bookcase:
A bookcase also called a bookshelf is a large free standing furniture piece with multiple shelves. It could be narrow or broad depending on the space to be covered and the number of shelves varies depending on the height of the case. A unit like this allows for variety in placement of books and ornaments.
This isn’t an exhaustive list of possible wall unit substitutes but in our opinion these are the best options you could find in Kenya when you visit one of our shops throughout Kenya or take a deep dive in our online shop here to purchase digitally.
